Recharging with a standard USB mini cable

Should there be any problem recharging or using active sync with a standard USB mini cable? I'd like to be able to charge and connect to my computer at home and at work, but I've been having tons of trouble charging from my computer at work using a standard USB instead of the one that came with the phone. It says it's charging, but doesn't seem to have much of a charge after I've unplugged it, even if it's been in for an hour. And if it's off, it starts up in a weird mode that doesn't show the normal desktop.
It seems to sync fine using the mobile device center in Windows 7. Is the cable possibly the source of the problem, or should I look elsewhere for a solution?

I use the standard OEM cable off my computer and it works OK. I use a charger with a standard mini usb cable to keep it charged at night and it does fine. I don't know if it would do so good trying to charge from only USB power. I ordered two Sprint Tilt2 cables from Amazon, but they came with the regular mini-usb end so I sent them back. Haven't found a source for the new style end yet.

i am seeing the same thing with XP and a standard USB cable. to test it, i turned off the phone. it was at 66%. let it sit on the USB cable for an hour with the yellow light showing the charge. after i turned it back on it was at 71% for an hour!!!
