Depends on the type of dispute. Arbitration can be just as long and expensive. Mediators can charge hefty fees but can really cut to the quick in my view and get the job done if settlement is your goal. Bear in mind, a good general rule about settlement is that each side has to be equally unhappy with the result. That means if someone owes you money, you are taking a cut and if you owe someone else money, you are going to pay shelling out something and probably more than you want to.
